Intro: The musical begins

We’re not sure what came over George and Joseph, but they decided that they were going to come up with songs on the spot to provide links between sections in this episode. The fun starts with a musical intro.

The streets of Harajuku

Join George and Joseph as they head down to Harajuku to meet the characters who gather there on a Sunday. There’s the man in black who loves to dance, a group of cosplayers, a Brazillian man who has flown 30 hours only to be disappointed (but makes up for it by wearing a psycho rabbit mask), and the man who dresses as a schoolgirl and impersonates a butterfly, the legendary Koichi Yamada. What do the tourists who are there think about all this?

Watch the video: The characters of Harajuku! See the video in High Definition on the Japan Podshow YouTube channel.

Entrepreneur interview: John Daub, Weblish Media Ltd.

This is an extract of the full interview which you can hear over at Making it in Japan.

Weblish Media Ltd, established in 2007, is an educational entertainment network, with videos distributed via iTunes to over 100,000 regular subscribers. John’s video series Vocabulary Generator was ranked the No. 1 video in Japan for 10 weeks, and the network has up to a million downloads per month.

In this interview, John tells us of his motivation for starting the company, and how it has grown. What effect has John’s experience of travelling to over 70 countries had upon his videos, and how can horses and llamas help students to learn Japanese?

John also talks about the help he got from Jetro, and what the future holds for Weblish. Listen to the full interview here.

Learning Japanese – Another prong

Joseph and George have a shared prong (learning Japanese tip) this week. They reccomend The Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar series from the Japan Times.

Competition Time

Listen up to see if you are the lucky winner of Kat McDowell’s new album, Echoes over the ocean

Yes, Joseph and George will perform it live, for you, in front of the Hachiko statue in Shibuya, and video it for you.

Listener’s feedback

Thank you again for your feedback! This week we have another tip-off about George impersonating an Australian DJ, and a very nice comment from our No.1 (and only?!) fan in California!

Details of how to submit your feedback below.

Music: Nobuki Ueda – Live in the Kitchen

Intro: The musical begins
We're not sure what came over George and Joseph, but they decided that they were going to come up with songs on the spot to provide links between sections in this episode. The fun starts with a musical intro.
The streets of Harajuku
Join George and Joseph as they head down to Harajuku to meet the characters who gather there on a Sunday. There's the man in black who loves to dance, a group of cosplayers, a Brazillian man who has flown 30 hours only to be disappointed (but makes up for it by wearing a psycho rabbit mask), and the man who dresses as a schoolgirl and impersonates a butterfly, the legendary Koichi Yamada. What do the tourists who are there think about all this?

Watch the video: The characters of Harajuku! See the video in High Definition on the Japan Podshow YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bih30IAiuKk).

Entrepreneur interview: John Daub, Weblish Media Ltd.
(http://pokya.jp/japanpodshow/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/weblish_shows.jpg)This is an extract of the full interview which you can hear over at Making it in Japan (http://pokya.jp/makeit/2009/09/john-daub-weblish-media-ltd/).

Weblish Media Ltd (http://www.weblish.net), established in 2007, is an educational entertainment network, with videos distributed via iTunes to over 100,000 regular subscribers. John's video series Vocabulary Generator was ranked the No. 1 video in Japan for 10 weeks, and the network has up to a million downloads per month.

In this interview, John tells us of his motivation for starting the company, and how it has grown. What effect has John's experience of travelling to over 70 countries had upon his videos, and how can horses and llamas help students to learn Japanese?

John also talks about the help he got from Jetro (http://www.jetro.go.jp/), and what the future holds for Weblish. Listen to the full interview here (http://pokya.jp/makeit/2009/09/john-daub-weblish-media-ltd).
Learning Japanese - Another prong
Joseph and George have a shared prong (learning Japanese tip) this week. They reccomend The Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar series from the Japan Times (http://bookclub.japantimes.co.jp/act/en/Detail.do?id=0454).
Competition Time
Listen up to see if you are the lucky winner of Kat McDowell's (http://www.katmusic.jp) new album, Echoes over the ocean (http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B0027ZY0MU?ie=UTF8&tag=josephtame-22&linkCode=as2&camp=247&creative=7399&creativeASIN=B0027ZY0MU)(http://www.assoc-amazon.jp/e/ir?t=josephtame-22&l=as2&o=9&a=B0027ZY0MU)
Win a song about you, performed live (and filmed) in Shibuya!
Yes, Joseph and George will perform it live, for you, in front of the Hachiko statue in Shibuya, and video it for you.

Get your entries in now by email!
Listener's feedback
Thank you again for your feedback! This week we have another tip-off about George impersonating an Australian DJ, and a very nice comment from our No.1 (and only?!) fan in California!

Details of how to submit your feedback below.

Back from their solar eclipse travels, George and Joseph have a lot of treat in store – kicking off with an interview with Hiko Saemon (aka Simon) of YouTube fame.

Learning Japanese Part 1: Interview with Hiko Saemon

Hiko Saemon is the creator of original, inspiring bilingual videos on YouTube, designed for learners of Japanese who would like to see a bit more of the ‘normal’ Japan (and less of the singing on trains), and Japanese YouTubers who like to watch quality content from non-Japanese producers. In this interview he tells us how he got into YouTubing, why he has a healthy right-wing fan base, and how it was that he came to be so good at Japanese.

Back from their solar eclipse travels, George and Joseph have a lot of treat in store - kicking off with an interview with Hiko Saemon (aka Simon) of YouTube fame.
Learning Japanese Part 1: Interview with Hiko Saemon
Hiko Saemon is the creator of original, inspiring bilingual videos on YouTube, designed for learners of Japanese who would like to see a bit more of the 'normal' Japan (and less of the singing on trains), and Japanese YouTubers who like to watch quality content from non-Japanese producers. In this interview he tells us how he got into YouTubing, why he has a healthy right-wing fan base, and how it was that he came to be so good at Japanese.

Simon is also working hard to promote the use of Creative Commons in Japan - check out the Creative Commons YouTube channel here. (http://youtube.jp/creativecommonsjp)

Here's one of his videos by way of introduction.

You can find Simon online in the following places

In the interview Simon also mentioned Ken Tanaka's You Tube Channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/helpmefindparents), and Kevin Cooney's BlogTV channel (http://www.blogtv.com/People/TokyoCooney).

Just a very brief update to bring you a couple of photos of the solar eclipse as seen from Mount Fuji.

The full adventure story will be included in the next episode of Japan Podshow [iTunes] [RSS] – in which you’ll also hear about George’s trip to China to see the eclipse.

As most of our energy went into live streaming the event, we didn’t have much time to take photos. To be honest, it was the communal atmosphere up there that was the most memorable thing – we were united by the sun and moon (how cute). But still, here’s a couple. We were fortunate it was cloudy as we’d taken the wrong filter with us, and thus had to shoot the sun ‘raw’!

It was an amazing adventure. It had all the making of a great movie
- extreme hardship on the night climb
- despair and dissapointment as we are advised to get off the mountain before the storm worsens
- an amazing final triumph as having climbed down the most difficult section of the mountain we look back and see blue sky: despite total exhaustion we once again scale the heights to finally see the solar eclipse!

There are about 8 videos shot live on Mount Fuji available here
Here’s the main video taken during the eclipse. It’s 40 mins long. Sorry about the wind noise! It cuts off at the end when I try to go down to Mt/ Fuji’s crater

In June 2009, writer, lecturer and human rights campaigner Aurdou Debito made a trip down to Tokyo to attend a conference. Whilst in town, he was kind enough to provide Japan Podshow with an interview.

About Arudou Debito
Debito first came to prominence in early 2000s when, upon taking a trip to an onsen in Otaru, Hokkaido, he and his family and friends were turned away because they ‘weren’t Japanese’ – despite their being naturalised Japanese citizens.

After lengthy negotiations, the onsen still refused to change its ‘no gaijin’ policy: this led to Debito and two others to take the case to court. For more information on the Otaru Onsen Case please visit Debito’s site.

Since the Otaru onsen case Debito has continued to campaign against discrimination – Japan is still the only developed country without any form of law banning racial discrimination. He has a regular columns in the Japan Times and maintains a website aimed at helping others who face discrimination whilst charting the progress of the anti-discrimination movement within Japan.

In this interview Debito talks about:

The first few years of his life in Japan

The Otaru Onsen Case

The new Gaijin cards and associated human rights issues, and what you can do to stop their introduction

Foreigners who defend discrimination against other foreigners claiming that ‘We are guests in Japan’

Has the situation improved for foreigners in Japan in recent years?

His public image, and new beard, Arthur.

Debito has published a book on the Otaru Onsen Case – available here
He is also co-author of the Handbook for Newcomers, Migrants and Immigrants to Japan

In June 2009, writer, lecturer and human rights campaigner Aurdou Debito made a trip down to Tokyo to attend a conference. Whilst in town, he was kind enough to provide Japan Podshow with an interview.

About Arudou Debito
Debito first came to prominence in early 2000s when, upon taking a trip to an onsen in Otaru, Hokkaido, he and his family and friends were turned away because they 'weren't Japanese' - despite their being naturalised Japanese citizens.

After lengthy negotiations, the onsen still refused to change its 'no gaijin' policy: this led to Debito and two others to take the case to court. For more information on the Otaru Onsen Case please visit Debito's site (http://www.debito.org/otarulawsuit.html).

Since the Otaru onsen case Debito has continued to campaign against discrimination - Japan is still the only developed country without any form of law banning racial discrimination. In this interview Debito talks about:

	* The first few years of his life in Japan

	* Foreigners who defend discrimination against other foreigners claiming that 'We are guests in Japan'
	* Has the situation improved for foreigners in Japan in recent years?
	* His public image, and new beard, Arthur.

Debito has published a book on the Otaru Onsen Case - available here (http://www.debito.org/?page_id=2)

Super funky, acoustic groove. These few words encapsulate the spirit of NGI. Comprising five members, two guitars, violin, cajon and melodion, and hailing from Japan and England they make use of all their influences to compose and perform mostly original music. Having spent the last eleven or so years in the USA working professionally, they bring a polished yet natural style to the Tokyo music scene. Capturing what music is all about, that is, communication, emotion and fun, don’t miss this chance to check them out and experience a stay at the Natural Groove Inn.

Natural Groove Inn will be playing live in Kichijoji in May 2009. Click here for more info
