At the Sumo

Flying sumoOn the show today we’re putting on weight and going to the Sumo at Ryogoku kokugikan. It was day 9 of one of the six annual Grand Sumo Contests, and in the last two hours we saw some of Japan’s top wrestlers throwing their weight around. You can see the video we shot at the Grand Sumo Hall here.

In this podcast, hear more about the sumo experience, including a story about the food that they wrestlers eat and where you can try it – whilst watching the wrestlers grazing in their stable.
Check tournament dates and seat availability on the official English Grand Tournament site. You can buy tickets here (Japanese only).

Just discovered you guys last week and have been trying to get caught up on the back catalog of episodes. I have been delighted with nearly every moment of Japan Podshow thus far and can’t wait to get caught up the whole series before the big season finale.

11.5 was brilliant, even though the commentating on the sumo match wasn’t NHK calibre. I’m still wiping Calpis off my keyboard and monitor after spraying it through my nose upon hearing, “He’s going for his ear!”

Keep up the good work, lads!

  • japanpodshow says:

Not up to NHK calibre?! Whatever are you saying?! You have no idea how many times we looked at Wikipedia before recording that commentary (once, but that was the page about water buffalo).

Great to get your feedback, thank you so much! Very much appreciated. Will work hard to make the final show a good one.

    Joseph :-)

Nice work! Great episode and especially love the video. It will fit in perfectly with next week’s Yr7 classes on sumo. Thanks as always for the entertainment. Have you seen any of these ones: The real sumo wrestling
