Koenji Awaodori

This extra web-only episode of Japan Podshow features some great footage from the Tokyo Koenji Awaodori Dance festival, held every year on the last weekend of August.

The festival, with approximately 12,000 performers, is one of the three largest in Tokyo, and is the second largest Awaodori in the whole of Japan. It has been running since 1957.

For more info see the official festival website.

This episode will not be available through iTunes, but can be viewed below, on YouTube, or view it in full size on Facebook.

iPhone users / downloaders can view it here (57mb, .mp4).

  • [...] As you can see I stuffed up the aspect ratio as I’m a newbie at Final Cut (video editing software), and there’s a significant loss in quality due to it being on YouTube. You can download the original from Japan Podshow. [...]

Thank you for the pod on the festival. I spent 10 years in Japan working in Hokkaido for the Grand Hotel Group. I found you by looking for a review on a Cannon HF S11. I got two surprises. I was impressed with the quality of the video.

  • Daniel says:

it’s more of a question than a comment but what format was it filmed in? (60i, 24p, 30p) i am looking into buying one of these and just wanted to see how the 24p/30p looked like. Im guessing it was in interlace but just asking because i wanted to see a sample of progressive video shot with the HF-S11.
    Thanks

  • japanpodshow says:

    I’m afraid I don’t actually know! sorry.

  • Wow, great video on the HFS11 … I want one!

  • Mark Wakeford says:

I too found this video from your Review on toptenreviews.com regarding the Canon HF-S11. I am also very impressed with the Quality. I only have one question. Was any additional lighting used?

  • japanpodshow says:

    no, just naturally available lighting.

  • John says:

I see the mp4 with tiny stripes when subjects are moving. Is that because my PC or the camera ? I have an xp64 2800+
Can i reneder it somehow to avoid theese stripes on slow PC’s ? Is very important for me because i want to buy an HFS11 and i don’t want stripes on moving subjects.
Thank you for the video !

  • japanpodshow says:

That problem was due to my using the wrong settings when exporting. Usually the video is fine.

  • John says:

Thanx, i was hoping to get that kind of answer. Thank you very much !

  • Howard says:

Thanks for sharing your experience on this marvellous video cam. I have the same camera and I use FCP7 for editing. I see you’ve shot some nice night scenes. I like them. Can I ask what settings did you use? The default night scene? or a ACG limit with manual exposure? I find it hard to shoot smooth pictures in the dark.
